Maxim Gorky

Maxim Gorky is the pseudonym of the classic of Russian literature Alexei Maksimovich Peshkov. The writer was born in Nizhny Novgorod on March 28, 1868, and passed away in the Moscow region on June 18, 1936. He is among the pleiad of the most significant and well-known Russian authors in the world. His authorial career began with novels and short stories, moved into the field of drama, included work with revolutionary motifs, and ended with talented autobiographical novels, plays, and novels.


Maxim Gorky was an early orphan, he was raised by his maternal grandmother. From the age of eleven, he had to earn food by various day jobs. The writer was taught to read by his mother, his grandfather familiarized him with the basics of church literacy. Maxim Gorky attended school for a short time, was considered a difficult teenager, all his life adhered to atheistic views.


After a short training, he left the parish school because of ridicule. He read a lot on his own, had an amazing memory. Surprised well-educated friends with his knowledge of the classics of world literature. At the same time, his texts abounded in errors, which for a long time ruled his wife, a professional proofreader. Difficult childhood, poverty and hard labor had a negative impact on the emotional state of Maxim Gorky: twice he tried to commit suicide and damaged his health.


In 1893, Alexei Peshkov's first stories were printed in the newspapers of Nizhny Novgorod. Two years later he became a professional journalist, earning money from his articles. In 1896, Alexei Peshkov enters into the only legal marriage with Ekaterina Volzhina. In the next six years, the author creates many talented stories that made him famous in Russia and abroad. His works, originally published in an edition of 1,000 copies, are published in increasing numbers. Both volumes of his works were instantly sold out, and the pseudonym Maxim Gorky became famous and popular. Life path

The writer was married three times, had many novels. At the same time, the official widow, to whom Stalin expressed his condolences, was the mother of his two children, Ekaterina Peshkova.


Maxim Gorky played chess with Vladimir Lenin, communicated with leading cultural figures around the world. In his dying days he was visited three times by Stalin. After the deprivation and poverty of his childhood and youth, his mature years he lived in luxury and affluence, surrounded by objects of art.


Solid royalties allowed him to help all relatives and friends, aspiring authors and ordinary people who sent letters asking for help. Eighteen years of life in exile did not make the writer a stranger to the country, and after long wanderings, he spent the end of his life in his homeland.
